MISSOULA — Virginia “Jiggs” Hunter, 86, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at St. Patrick Hospital.

Jiggs was born on Aug. 29, 1931, in Arlee to Clyde and Adeline Sanders. She was raised on Saddle Mountain in Arlee and received her education at Arlee School.

In 1948, she married a WWII Navy Seaman, Homer S. Colman. From this union, six beautiful children were born. They later divorced. In 1964, she married Richard Shaw, and from that marriage, two more beautiful children were born. Mom took her motherly responsibilities very seriously and to heart. She knew the challenges, obstacles and the struggles she would endure but those struggles never compromised her ability to provide for and to always put her children first. She was the sole caregiver for her children. In 1972, she married Charles Hunter, Jr. They later divorced.

In 1984, she decided to further her education and was an honor roll student and received an AA degree in secretarial sciences from Salish Kootenai College in 1986.

Jiggs worked various jobs, sometimes two at a time to provide for her family.  She worked as a waitress, a driver for the Indian Health Services Dental Program, many years for the CSKT Commodity program, then finished her career working with Gina Ardiana, who was like a daughter to her, at the Arlee Tribal Health Clinic until her retirement. Jiggs also served on the Two Eagle River School Board. She was well liked in each of her positions which resulted in her building some of her life long relationships with friends.

Her hobbies included spending time with her family, daily crosswords, playing a game of cribbage, hitting a good rummage sale, baking her scrumptious goodies to share, playing bingo and once in a while hit the machines at Grey Wolf. Her absolute favorite place to eat was the China Buffet. She also enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings.

Preceding Jiggs in death were her parents, Adeline and Clyde Sanders, her sister Lorena Lawson, brother Benny Sanders, and sons Larry and Lloyd Colman. She is survived by her children Charlene (Kenny) Friedlander, Roxanna Colman-Herak (Marty), Lyle Colman, Joan Colman, Tracy Shaw and Tari Shaw. She also had 17 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Services began on Friday, March 9, at the Arlee Indian Senior Center with Rosary being recited at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Jocko Church beginning at 11 a.m. with burial to follow. We ask everyone to join us in a feast immediately after and celebrate the life of our loving mother, grandmother, auntie and friend.
