Bella Clairmont Obituary

Bella Jane Clairmont

June 29, 1941 - October 11, 2024

Jane lived her whole life on the Flathead Indian Reservation and was a graduate of Dixon schools. Jane was a cheerleader in high school and even modeled a bit as a young lady. She took a shot at Miss Indian America, too. Jane had impeccable style blending her traditional and modern fashion in a unique and classy way. She was gifted in her design with sewing, beading, arts and crafts.

Jane dedicated her life to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), following in the footsteps of her father, Sam Clairmont, who served on the tribal council and retired from a life-long career with the tribes. Hired during her high school years at the Dixon Agency, she spent nearly 59 years working for the CSKT. Jane’s commitment and skills, particularly in administration, budget and finance, helped the tribe grow significantly.  Her influence was deeply felt throughout tribal administration.

Jane held various positions within the organization, from student trainee up to Director of Administration and Budget. In addition, she contributed to essential areas such as payroll, contracts, and grants. Jane was known as a meticulous and dedicated employee, becoming a pillar of institutional knowledge and a trusted leader. Her leadership extended beyond professional boundaries. She emphasized the importance of family and community instilling this philosophy in her colleagues.

Despite her pivotal role, Jane was a humble figure, preferring to stay out of the spotlight. Her colleagues described her as a nurturing leader, always available to listen and offer guidance. Many admired her not just for her expertise but also for her caring nature and keen sense of humor. She had the unique and talented craft as an amazing and gifted storyteller. She loved life by helping others and looked forward to the opportunities and challenges that came with it. Jane was known to be a  mother-like figure and mentor to many within the CSKT organization and community. She left an irreplaceable void after her retirement in 2018.

Jane’s life outside of work was centered around her family, particularly her two children, Annie Clairmont and Steve Clairmont along with her loving grandchildren. As a single mother, she balanced her career along with raising her children. She worked hard to instill in them a deep sense of duty and service. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Bella & Sam Clairmont and her brother, Steve. She is survived by her children, Annie and Steve Clairmont. Her daughter-in-law Kyung-Hee Clairmont. Her grandchildren: Jonah, Khalia, Nicole and Jacob. Her siblings: Jim, Carol and Wendy. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins, and “adopted” kids. She was a trusted friend, advisor, Auntie and yaya to many. Her legacy of dedication and leadership will live on in the hearts and minds of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes for generations to come. A traditional service was held the weekend of October 12-13 with internment at the Tribal Polson Cemetery.
