David John Dragonfly, 68, passed away in the comfort of his home on October 25, 2024.
David Dragonfly was an Indian Ledger artist, of Blackfeet heritage, living in nearby Polson, Montana. Born in Kalispell, MT and raised on the Blackfeet Reservation, he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There he learned stone carving, plus jewelry and printmaking. After studying with many prominent artists in Santa Fe, he continued his education at the University of Montana, graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
During his studies at UM, David took a class on woodcuts painting, a version of collagraph printmaking that involves several layers and varying types of materials. His art blends aspects of his Blackfeet and Assiniboine roots, and pays respect to his Native heritage, while embracing the history of traditional Ledger Art.
Art shows that Dragonfly has attended include the Colorado Indian Art Market, Denver, Colorado: Great Falls Native American Art Show, Great Falls, Montana; Big Sky Indian Art Market, Billings, Montana and Northern Plains Tribal Arts, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 2006, David was the featured artist at the Harvest Moon Ball, an annual fundraiser held at the East Glacier Lodge, in support of the Blackfeet Community Foundation.
