Joycelyn Matooyoh’kimyaakii (Calling From The Grass Woman) Davis-DesRosier. July 8th 1962- January 18 2023 age 60. Born in Browning Montana. Joycelyn attended multiple grade schools in Washington, Busbee Montana and Browning high-school where she completed her GED. She completed two Associate Degrees from BCC and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from MSU Northern (Havre) graduating Cum Laud with honors.
Joycelyn met the love of her life and future husband Michael DesRosier in 1987 and married him in 1988. In 2013 her and Michael had their wedding vows renewed by the Catholic Church.
Joycelyn’s first born son Dustin Jay Bird was born in 1980. Jesse DesRosier her second son in 1988, Michael John Jr. “MJ” in 1990. She also became a mother to Michael’s two Children Warren and Sarah.
She worked 15 years in Blackfoot Immersion for Piegan Institute “Cutswood” becoming director until retiring in 2013. Learning and teaching the Blackfoot language was her passion. Joycelyn also worked for Glacier National Park, Blackfeet Community College, Browning Public Schools, Office of Public Instruction in Helena, and the Blackfeet Early Head Start program; bringing language and culture to her work.
Joycelyn was an active member in Blackfoot ceremonies throughout her entire life, being a member of the Ninamskaa “Thunder Medicine Pipe” Society, she was a helper in the Okan “circle camp” ceremony and a member of the Oh’kimiiks “Beaver Bundle societies”, she was a elder leader of the Niipoomakiiks “Chickadee” society. Joycelyn was also a founding member of the sacred Stamiksiipookaiks “Horn Society” on the Blackfeet Reservation.
Joycelyn was a loving sister, mother, grandmother and wife and looking forward to soon becoming a great grandmother. She will be remembered by her living siblings, Darnell Rides At The Door (Robert “Smokey”), Timothy “Kink” Davis (Deborah), Lorrie Tatsey (Peter, “Rusty”), Emmie Bird (Leo “Oozer”), Doug Davis (Deborah), and Nondie Davis, Honey Davis (Wayne Smith). She’s also survived by her children Warren DesRosier (Dana), Sarah DesRosier, Dustin Bird (Alacia), Jesse DesRosier (Tillie) and Michael DesRosier jr. Her grandchildren Martin Lane Spotted Bear, Colton Zubach, Megan DesRosier, Jestin Wagner, Michelle DesRosier, Warren jr., Brandon Wagner, Jayda Torpey, Treyce Harwood, Cianna DesRosier, Stockton Bird, Iiniipooka Torpey, Samson Bird, Sahkoom DesRosier. As well as her adopted daughters Treyace Yellow Owl, and Tylee Wellman, and her numerous nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by sisters Marteen Burns, and Ollie Davis-Hall. Her mother Cynthia Kipp. Her Father Leo Davis, and her step father that raised her Eugene “Tinse” Kipp. Joycelyn has so many friends and relatives who will remember her for her friendly word, sparkling smile and a laugh that filled the room.
