Payton Mays Obituary

Payton Alexander Mays was born March 20, 2006 to Evelyn Charlo and Daniel Mays in Polson, MT.  He passed away Friday, December 15, 2023 in Arlee, MT.
Payton was raised in Pablo, MT and later returned to his family's hometown, Arlee, MT.  He attended the Ronan School District, Arlee Schools, and most recently, Two Eagle River School.

From a very young age Payton took a great interest in sports.  His first word was "ball" and he would shoot around on his little hoop even before he could walk.  From there his love of sports took off- football, golf, baseball and basketball.  He loved watching football and keeping up on his teams.  Dan was an avid golf player and introduced his son to the game, bringing him along on trips to the course with friends and family. At a young age Payton began playing baseball and basketball competitively, racking up medals along the way.  He was his family's favorite first baseman.  By far, his favorite sport was basketball.  From playing in little dribblers, to 3 on 3s and tournaments in WA, ID and MT to playing along his teammates for the Chiefs and Warriors.  He was looking forward to joining his teammates on the court at Two Eagle in January.  From his love of basketball also came his love for shoes.  He amassed quite a collection and was always looking for more.  Payton also enjoyed video games, the outdoors, hanging with his friends and making music.  He had an awesome video game setup and spent many hours gaming out with friends.

He enjoyed camping, fishing and 4-wheeling as a young man.  Whether it was sports, 4-wheeling, or video games, it always seemed like Payton took it up naturally and ran with it.  His family loved cheering him on from the sidelines, traveling along with him brought them great joy over the years and they were always proud of Payton. His friends meant a lot to him.  He was a loyal friend and loved his bros.

The past few years he spent quite a bit of time with his friends and their families.  You all are appreciated and Payton loved you very much.  Payton is preceded in death by his father, Daniel Alexander Mays, his grandparents David "Gene" Mays and Sophie Quequesah Mays, his tupyes Alice (Morigeau) Gardipe and Raymond Gardipe Sr.  and Agnes "Virg" (Asencio) Charlo and Louis B. "Johnny" Charlo. Payton is survived by his mom, Evelyn Charlo of Arlee, MT.  His grandparents Zelda (Gardipe) and Charlie Charlo, his uncles Robert (Emma) and Tyler (Jocelyn) Charlo, Christopher Gardipe, Lawrence (Lonnie), Doug (Amanda), Nick (Cindy) Mays, his aunts Melinda and Charlene Charlo, Ginger Morigeau, Pam Mays and his younger sister Remington Mays.  Although Payton was Evelyn's only child, he was brought up alongside his cousins who were raised like his siblings: Jay Charlo, Louis Charlo, Memory Clampett, Charlyn & Kaitlyn Charlo-Shepherd, Isabella Charlo-Wynne, Madeline and Madison Charlo.  He is also survived by his bonus grandparents Cleo Kenmille and Bob Wynne and his kitty sister Sassy.  Also surviving him are many cousins, great aunts and uncles too numerous to name here.  Along with that, he leaves behind his many friends.  Payton loved everyone and will be missed by countless people he encountered through his short time with us.  We know life will not be the same for many without him.  Pallbearers are Hunter, Hiram, and Francis Brown, Quincy Groom, Benjamin Old Person Harlow, Juaquin Santos, Jorren Cahoon and Sxwlekws Bell.  Honorary pallbearers Louis W.
