Steven Roy Skunkcap Sr., 62, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023, at the family residence west of Browning, Montana.
A viewing/wake was held at the Skunkcap family home west of Browning beginning Thursday, May 11. On Friday, May 12 he was taken to the Chief Cornerstone Church for services. He was brought back to the Skunkcap family home after the services. On Saturday, May 13 a prayer service was held at 2:00 PM at the Skunkcap family home. A Horse/Rider procession led him to his final resting place for burial at the Willow Creek Cemetery.
Steve lived in Browning, Montana and Fort Hall, Idaho. He took after his father and was a carpenter by trade. He was a Wildland Fire fighter with the Shoshone-Bannock Wildland Fire crew. He was an extraordinary artist who painted brilliant pieces of the outdoors, Indians he met and the mountains. He enjoyed his video camera documenting many sporting events. Most of all Indian Relay was his great interest. He recorded many Indian Relay races and would watch them over and over. He kept the Skunkcap Indian Relay team going after his dad focused on coordinating the Northwest Montana Fair Indian Relay races. Steve led his team to the Championship in Kalispel. His relay riders were his brother, David, and Makie Gobert. Some of his Indian Relay team members were Joe Rattler, Freddy Pongah, Allen Mad Plume, Scotty Little Dog and always encouraged his boys and nephews to Indian Relay. He was asked to be the “Starter” of many Indian Relay Races; he was one of few who could take a cussing over Indian Relay and not take it personal. Aside from Indian Relay he loved being on the ranch taking care of horses, cattle, fencing and most of all enjoy driving his “Safari Mobile” to the ridge. This was his peaceful place.
He was born in Browning on March 30, 1961, to the late James LeRoy Skunkcap, Sr. and Marlene Edmo Skunkcap.
