ARLEE – Alice Marie “Abby” Morigeau Gardipe, 95, of Arlee, the only surviving child of her parents, died at her home on Agency Road surrounded by her family Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012.
She was the daughter of Collette Saxa Lamoose Morigeau and Octave Morigeau. She was born Oct. 15, 1916, at her family home on the Lamoose Ranch north of Arlee. She was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, and the oldest tribal member living on the reservation. She would have been 96 on her next birthday.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Gardipe Sr.; parents, Octave Morigeau and Collette Saxa LaMoose; maternal grandparents, Lucy Lumphry and Pierre Lamoose; great-grandparents, Francois Saxa and Cecille (Ve-ni-to); great-great-grandfather, Ignace “Big Ignace” Saxa LaMoose; paternal grandparents, Alexander Morigeau and Rosalie Finley; great-grandparents, Francis “Frank” Morigeau and Isabel McTailor Morigeau; her special uncle, John “Nun” LaMoose; special cousin, Louise LaMoose Combs; and brothers and sisters, Paul, twin infant brothers, Evelyn “Babe” Grenier, Olive Morigeau Burland, Azilda, Alex, George, Josephine Morigeau Steele, Joseph “Bud,” Carl “Sonny,” Dorothy “Sis” Morigeau Shelby; her nephew, who was raised as her brother, Francis “Frenchy” Burland; granddaughter, Rosalie Charlo; and grandsons, Victor Brown and Winston Brown.
She is survived by her children, Raymond Gardipe Jr. at the family home in Arlee, Arlene Gardipe Brown (Preston) of Arizona, Tim Gardipe of Polson, Zelda Gardipe Charlo (Charles) of Arlee, of Jeanne Gardipe (Lyle) of Arlee and her granddaughter who was raised as her daughter, Michelle Brown of Arlee; grandchildren, Collette Brown, Brian Brown, Candice Brown, Christopher Gardipe, Kevin Gardipe, Christina Gardipe, Trevor Gardipe, Melinda Charlo, Evelyn Charlo, Charlene Charlo, Robert Charlo, Tyler Charlo, April Yother (Steve), Alicia Zeiler, Lynn Zeiler and Lyle R. (Shacazie) Zeiler; great-grandchildren, Breanne, Natalie, Mckenzie, Deschane, Payton, Jacelyn, Louis, Jake, Adrian, Steven, LaDeva, Andrea, CJ, Knowledge, Sage and Joshua; and numerous nieces and nephews.
On Friday, Aug. 10, a Rosary will be held at the Arlee Community Center at 8 p.m. Mass will be held at the Jocko Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.
